Glossary of Terms  
   
Retail Fascia Name The name of the retailer, as seen on the store. Each retailer is shown individually, even if they are part of a group
   
Website Where a website address exists, this is shown here as a hyperlink and will connect you directly with the retailer's website
   
Shop Type The Shop Type defines a specific type of retailer (e.g. clothing) and is used in conjunction with the Merchandise Category (e.g. womenswear) to identify retailers in a particular sector.
   
Merchandise Category This describes the type of goods the retailer sells. Retailers may be a specialist stocking just one merchandise category; they may have a primary merchandise category and one or more secondary categories; or they may sell a variety of goods with no emphasis on any one particular category. A detailed list showing what each merchandise category includes is shown below.
   
Target Customer This field is specific to clothing and footwear and shows whether the retailer is targeting safe, individual or young areas of fashion (a more detailed explanation can be found via the help key next to the Target Customer field)
   
Holding Company Some retailers are part of a group under one Holding Company, where this is the case the Holding Company name is shown and you can access limited information about that company
   
Financial Year End As quoted in the latest Report & Accounts
   
Total Net Turnover Taken directly from the Report & Accounts, this is the turnover (or Sales) figure excluding VAT
   
Operating Profit Taken directly from the Report & Accounts, this is the Operating Profit for the company before any exceptional items
   
Pre-Tax Profit Taken directly from the Report & Accounts, this is the profit on ordinary activities before taxation and includes any exceptional items
   
UK Retail Net Turnover Where a retailer operates outside the UK, the amount of Turnover (or Sales) excluding VAT arising solely in the UK is shown here
   
Notes Explanatory notes where necessary will be shown here e.g. where the reporting period is other than 12 months
   
Distribution The distribution of a retailer is defined as one of the following:
  National - across the whole of the UK
  Regional - across one region, e.g. North West
  Limited - a small number of national outlets
   
UK Outlets Total The total number of outlets under that retail fascia name, including High Street, Out of Town franchises, concessions and factory or other types of outlet. A date indicates the time this outlet count was sourced.
   
High Street Outlets Number of retail outlets in High Street/Town Centre locations.
   
Out of Town Outlets Number of retail outlets in retail parks and other out of town locations
   
Concessions Number of retail outlets operating as concessions within other stores
   
Franchises Number of retail outlets operating as franchises
   
Factory/Other Number of factory outlets or others not defined above (e.g. airports)
   
Typical Sales Area FSP estimate of the typical selling area the retailer takes
   
Typical Sales Density FSP estimate of the typical gross sales per sq. ft.
   
Sales per Outlet The value of Sales (or Turnover) excluding VAT per outlet operating under the retail fascia name
   
Articles Articles from the press and other publications, restricted to the most recent eight.
