Hot 100

Complimentary to FSP's Retailer Risk Analysis which maps out the worst performing retailers in the UK, the Hot 100 highlights the top retailers in the country based on a variety of factors.

The Hot 100 during the 3rd quarter of 2009 include...

  • Kurt Geiger
  • Halfords
  • Iceland
  • La Senza
  • Paperchase
  • Specsavers
  • WH Smith
  • Boden
  • Warren James
  • Jack Wills
  • Links of London
  • Selfridges
  • Harrods
  • Fred Perry
  • Molton Brown

Clothing & Footwear is the most heavily featured merchandise category in the list, with over 36% of retailers featured categorised as such. The top of this bunch include Weird Fish, Hugo Boss, Fred Perry, Boden and Jane Norman, who all have a p2 score of 196 or above identifying them as financially ‘Very Strong’. Household is the second most featured merchandised category in the Hot 100 list, surprising when you consider the turbulent time that particular sector has been experiencing of late (B&Q, for example, posted a 4.5% decrease in turnover for the year ended January 31st 2009, however more recent results have come in better – the quarter to 31/10/09 is up 5.7% on a LfL basis).
Books & Stationery comes off the worse, with just one retailer from this category featured in the Hot 100 – smoother operator, Paperchase (probably a bit of a relief for Borders Group Inc. at the moment, I'd image!)

What is the Hot 100?

It is fact that 32 of the 78 retail administrations recorded by FSP since January 2008 (to July 2009) resulted in the business being rescued. And so while sales are low and two thirds of retailers are in poor financial health, it is likely that we will emerge from recession with a leaner, financially fitter and more dynamic high street.

Amongst those best placed to take advantage of the recovery are the FSP "Hot 100". These highly sustainable businesses have consistently delighted their loyal customers, have prudently managed their finances and have cautiously expanded, maintaining their appeal - and are the retail businesses needed to fill vacant shopping centre or high street units.

FSP’s Hot 100 combines BIS Wealth Creation Efficiency Ratio (from analysis of latest financial accounts) with FSP’s SnapShop news monitoring service, to identify rising high street stars. Those who remain afloat do so in a tough environment, which makes it all the more impressive that they’ve maintained the financials required to get onto the list. But how, why, and what is the future?
