Outlet centres are one of the most enduring retail success stories of the past 30 years. From early beginnings in the United States, the concept grew rapidly in UK in the late 1990s and across continental Europe after 2000.
Today there are 220 trading outlet centres in Europe, totalling 3.5 million sq m. These span a variety of formats including luxury designer outlet villages, specialist tourist attractions, mid market shopping malls, retail parks, mill villages and mixed-use entertainment complexes.
While many schemes such as Cheshire Oaks, McArthurGlen Troyes, Bicester Village or Parndorf Designer Outlet have become household names, this rapid expansion has not been without challenges. For example, many projects in Germany and France, have been delayed by local planning objections, a number of schemes have lost out to rival developments while others have closed or underperformed as a result of being ill conceived or poorly managed

Few parts of Europe fall outside 90 minutes of an outlet centre. However, with trading patterns at half of Europe’s outlet centres still maturing, 30 new schemes under construction and proposals for 100 additional schemes, it is important that the early lessons from more mature markets are incorporated within the development and asset management of sites
