Following a joint research project with twentyretail, Geoff Nicholson is a panellist with JLL's Guy Grainger, Jeremy Collins Head of Retail Development at JLP, Andrew Jones CEO of Metric Property and the Editor of Retail Week, Tim Danaher.
The topics to be discussed at the seminar, held in conjunction with the BCSC Conference in Manchester, included:
- The impact of On-line and ‘E-tailing’
- Changing Occupier Requirements
- How much retail space is currently obsolescent?
- Results of pre-BCSC survey
Panelist and FSP MD, Geoff Nicholson commented :
“There was a lively debate on the panel about the level of obsolete retail stock likely to exist in 2020.
Unless decisive action is taken, mostly recognising that land values have to be allowed to drop sufficiently to make redevelopment economically sustainable, up to 40% of retail space could become surplus to requirements. However, if property owners, local government, planners and occupiers learn to work together, the figure is likely to be closer to 10%.
This still represents a dramatic shift in the retail scene and calls for substantial change in the way the property industry goes about its business.”
FSP covered the seminar live via Twitter and Facebook, highlighting the key points discussed.
