I went recently to Northampton to visit Legal & General’s two day exhibition in the Grosvenor Centre.
The exhibition outlined the plans for the Centre and gauged what the residents of Northampton want in their town.
FSP Director Jo Hewson has worked closely with Legal & General on the re-development project and was there to help explain the plans to members of the public and to register their comments.
The Grosvenor Centre provides two levels of shops in the centre of Northampton between the bus station and the Market Square. read more…

Response to the Financial Times article Asda warns over consumer confidence : It is one thing to reference the Gfk index of Consumer Confidence, as does SnapShop each month, or for Asda to calculate the spending power of the average family, apparently down £9 a week in January 2011 compared to 12 months previous. It is quite another to observe behavioural changes that indicate a loss of consumer confidence. Amongst the changes to which Asda has drawn attention are: read more…

Visiting the first Discount UK outlet, the new fascia from Poundworld, prompted some thoughts about the dynamism of UK retailing. The Discount UK proposition is to offer a wide variety of branded, mostly household, products at discounted prices. There is no great depth within each merchandise category but major brands are on offer. The store environment is bright, well laid-out and tidy. read more…

Our good friends, the Local Data Company, provided some research for BBC news, which shows whilst the number of empty shops in our high streets is still rising, the focus of the high street is changing as service providers take advantage of the fact that people cannot buy what they offer over the internet. The LDC’s Matthew Hopkinson said, “It is more a reflection of our changing shopping habits. The internet was widely heralded as the death knell for the High Street, but the data shows that shopping in person is still a key pastime for many." read more…

35 Chairmen and CEO’s of major public companies, including many multiple retailers, have urged, in a letter to The Daily Telegraph, that the deficit reduction programme should be implemented immediately and not be spread over more than one parliament. it is natural to ask, Why? What insight do these men, no women were included, who jointly earn more than £14m a year, think they can give to make the world a better place? read more…

I have never needed the fingers on any hand to count the number of unemployed people I know. There just weren’t any. Undoubtedly environment was a huge factor. Birds of a feather, etc. We’re all white collar, professional, management – all the boring boxes on any census or survey, and nothing that would add substantially to our life assurance premiums. Now I need more than one hand to count my unemployed friends, and all are the type who won’t register on the government’s statistics as they’re living on their past earnings and anyway, surely something’s just around the corner? read more…

Firstly, as is customary at this time, I'd like to wish you all a Happy New Year. Sadly for some, currently this year is far from happy. I'm thinking about Woolworths staff, who really are out of a job, along with many involved in retail property, as well as USC/Officers Club/Whittards staff who might have thought they were out of a job, but due to the wonders of pre-pack administration, actually find life will probably go on much as before. Hopefully, in the "cup is half-full" view, the start of this year is just the start of something new; a chance to make some life changes which may have been long overdue. read more…

Those of you out there who receive SnapShop Monthly will see from my leader that reasonable economic performance in the UK (until recently!) has not been reflected in retail and I wonder why. Although there are possible social and psychological explanations, at FSP we believe the valid explanation is an industrial one. This is where the future retailing landscape is being shaped by the rapid expansion of online retailing, the increasing sales of non-food through grocery outlets and the increasing number of retail parks trading with Open A1 retailers. read more…
